While we started as a tree climber pants company, evolving into a chainsaw protection source, most fans of Arborwear know us for our Double Thick sweatshirts. How did this Arborwear staple come to be? And how did our sweatshirts evolve into the wide selection we have today? Let’s talk about it.Presenting, The Cotton Double Thick.
Most people have several hoodies hanging up in their closet. They might be worn, tattered, or just plain flimsy. We launched the Cotton Double Thick sweatshirt in 2007 following a need for heavier duty workwear sweatshirts.
Single digit ounce sweatshirts were just not cutting it for our cold weather clients, so before we designed the single thick, we designed the Cotton Double Thick with two layers of 100% 13 oz. pre-washed cotton.
The Double Thick is an investment. It stands up to years of hard work wear and tear, and allows you to own just one solid sweatshirt, rather than a rotation of five “meh” sweatshirts.
The details on this sweatshirt became the blueprint for all our other sweatshirt styles to follow. Just like all of our pants feature a Rugged Gusset Crotch™, our sweatshirts are made with gusseted armpits so you can move freely while working in the trees or on the ground.
The pockets are vertically recessed, which is a fancy way of saying, debris stays out and the pouch won’t catch on anything.
When you get a new sweatshirt, we know one of the first things you do is pull the drawstring out and cut the neck hole a little wider. Sure, that might give you a little more breathing room - and keep you safe from machinery moving parts - but by doing so, you lose all control of the hood.
That’s why all of our hooded pullover sweatshirts feature three button snaps and an oversized hood. Pull your sweatshirt over your hardhat with ease.
Once we made the hooded pullovers, we have to admit, we got pretty excited. So, we made different styles of the cotton double thick sweatshirt: half zip, full zip, and crew neck.
The thing about cotton (and 26 oz. of it) is that when cotton gets wet, it gets HEAVY. About 10 pounds heavy. Yep, that’s heavier than a lap dog. You’re tough and all, but carrying a lap dog around your chest and shoulders all day is just exhausting. Plus, you’d be completely neglecting leg day.
Then Came Tech.
Understanding that people who work in wet conditions and want something a little lighter, we created the Tech Sweatshirt in 2017. It’s 33% lighter to be exact, more-performance forward than the cotton, and contains a fabric protector that repels liquids.
10 years after the launch of the Cotton Double Thick, we made the Tech Double Thick sweatshirts with two layers of 100% 9 oz. polyester fleece. We kept all the favorite features from our previous sweatshirts, with crew neck, full zip, single thick, HVSA and 2-tone color options.
Safety First
We offer an extensive line of HVSA Class 3 certified sweatshirts in a variety of styles and hi-viz colorways. You can choose from hooded pullovers, full zips, crew necks, single thick, double thick, you name it.
Also, we offer a Flame Resistant Double Thick in hooded pullover and full zip options. This is a great sweatshirt for those who work in fire/electrical hazardous settings. The sweatshirt meets safety standards: NFPA 70E Compliant; ASTM F1506-15 Compliant, OSHA Final Rule 1910.269
Trust Us, It's Science.
In 2018, we looked extra hard at ways we could evolve the Arborwear sweatshirt. So, we got out our imaginary lab coats and turned to science.
Named after the scientific process of generating heat (thermogenesis), the Thermogen Hooded Full Zip Sweatshirt keeps your core warm and lets your pits breathe. It’s performance driven, insulated, and repels rain/snow/slush like nobody’s business.
Most Recent Adds
We’ve added our Athletic Gray and Burnt Orange colorways to the half zip line. Also, our Burnt Orange joined the Single Thick family recently. You can find all of our sweatshirts on arborwear.com
Which Will it Be?
All of our sweatshirts are designed with your safety and comfort in mind. Really, we think about it a lot. Like, “Is John going to get his best work done in this sweatshirt?”
When it comes to choosing your sweatshirt and style, it comes down to preference, daily function needs, and company standards.
